What's Your Number? The Peace Index Explained

Updated: 2 days ago

Every person is carrying around a number. It's a sense of how much peace they have right now. It moves up and down, sometimes daily, and most of us never stop to name it.

That's a problem, because you can't lead from a place you haven't measured. A team can look calm on the surface and still be running low underneath, and if you're not checking, you won't see it until something breaks. So here's a simple way to take your own reading.

What the Peace Index measures

Where are YOU now? Let’s get a sense of how well you are doing.

The Peace Index is a benchmark exercise for gauging how you feel around five metrics:

1. Purpose

2. Place

3. Provision

4. Personal Health

5. People

How to calculate your Peace Index

Here are the instructions.

  1. Rate yourself from 0-100 on how well you feel / how much peace you have right now in each circle. (1 = no peace / 100 = highest level) Each circle gets a number between 1 and 100; your numbers do NOT add up to 100.

  2. Add up all 5 numbers and divide by 5. You’ll have your overall Peace Percentage Index.

Definitions of each circle:

  • Purpose – how you feel about the work you are doing or the life you are living, your calling or purpose.

  • Place - how you feel about where you live, your house, the city, or state.

  • Provision – how comfortable you feel with your financial resources, income, savings, retirement.

  • Personal Health – how at peace you are with your health and activity level, how well you are feeling, including your mental health.

  • People – how at peace are you with your key relationships right now? This may be family, friends, colleagues, neighbors.

What is your Peace Index number? How do you feel about it? Of course, it won’t be 100%, but the goal is to understand where you are today so you can work towards being as close to 100% as possible.
